Army and the Nation in Cameroon: an unbreakable bond

"Defence Forces and the Cameroonian People, in harmony to safeguard Peace and National Unity, bedrock of a strong and prosperous Cameroon’’. As you most probably have understood, this is the main theme of the 51st edition of celebrations marking our Unitary State.

According to the French language dictionary, safeguard is a protection and a guarantee provided by an Authority or an Institution. Obviously, safeguarding benefits only goods that are considered valuable. For us Cameroonians, Peace and National Unity represent the best that we have in common.

Constantly sought after, Peace and National Unity are so dear to us that we prefer to prevent them from being destroyed, rather than having to rebuild them. This task is not the sole responsibility of the State, although this entity is the custodian of our common will.

As national ideals, Peace and National Unity deserve the undivided attention of all. It is needless to emphasize that we are well aware of this, as the obscurantist, separatist and communitarian tendencies experienced in some parts of the country remind us daily of the losses, sufferings and distress undergone and endured by those who yield to the voice of division.

Moreover, the warmongering agitation in our environment could also pose a serious threat to our serenity, when we measure not only the ease of dissemination, but also the capacity of belligerent thought patterns to cause harm. In fact, the latter occupy media platforms. On purpose perhaps? And if so, for what purpose?

Obviously, the answer to this question is far from being found within the initial line of thought. Notwithstanding, and even because of this complexity, each and every one of us should feel challenged and concerned by the noble mission of safeguarding our human and material, logical and ideological assets.

This will be the reason, on 20 May 2023, for the simultaneous call on the Defence Forces and the Cameroonian People, two intertwined entities and matrix components of the sovereignty that we have the right to exercise over Peace and National Unity, by building them relentlessly, safeguarding them uncompromisingly, in all circumstances, and down to the smallest gesture. This is the price of Cameroon’s strength and prosperity. /-
