Maritime: Ongoing workshop on the National Strategy for the Reduction of Greenhouse Gases (GHG) in the maritime sector.
A 2-day workshop on the drafting of a strategy and implementation plan for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector in Cameroon has opened on May 22, 2025, at the Sawa Hotel, Douala.

The opening ceremony was presided by the Representative of the Minister of Transport who doubles as Subdirector of Maritime, River and Lake Transportation, EOUSSA Albert, closely assisted by the Technical Advisor at the National Port Authority, representative from the International Maritime Organisation and expert from the Global Maritime Forum.
The workshop has as objectives amongst others: facilitate discussions amongst key stakeholders to assess current GHG emissions from ships and impacts in Cameroon; identify priority sectors and activities contributing to GHG emissions from ships and explore mitigation opportunities; review existing policies, regulations and initiatives related to climate change and emissions from ships and propose enhancements to support shipping decarbonisation.
The expected outcomes of the workshop include amongst others: awareness raising on shipping emissions and possible mitigation plans in Cameroon; draft shipping GHG strategy outline with clear goals, targets and action plans; recommendations for policy enhancements and regulatory measures to support shipping GHG reduction efforts; identification of key stakeholders and coordination mechanisms for ongoing collaboration.
Workshop participants have been drawn from relevant government Ministries and agencies in charge of emissions from ships; representatives from private sector including shipping and port industries with significant GHG emissions, NGOs and civil society organisations working on environmental and climate issues; academic institutions and research organisations with expertise in climate science, policy and mitigation strategies, petroleum and hydrocarbon companies and financial institutions.
The workshop will run till May 23, 2025 and it has been organised by the Ministry of Transport in collaboration with the International Maritime Organisation.
